Chandigarh: Man held guilty of hitting traffic cop with bike

Over 18 months after a duo hit a traffic cop with a motorcycle after being stopped from riding it on a cycle track, a local court has convicted one of the accused and acquitted the other.
As per the police complaint, two cops posted with the cycle squad were on traffic awareness duty on the cycle track along the Sector 32/46 dividing road on September 2, 2021.
There, they saw two men, Yuvraj and Chirag, riding a motorcycle on the cycle track without helmets around 5 pm.
When constable Harish Kumar signalled them to stop, the motorcycle rider sped up and crashed the two-wheeler into him. The constable fell unconscious and suffered injuries on the mouth and face.
Both the accused had fled towards Sector 46, leaving their motorcycle behind. The constable was rushed for treatment to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, for treatment.
A case was registered under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Sector-34 police station.
The accused, Chirag of Sector 47-D and Yuvraj Singh of Sector 45, were eventually arrested.
As per police, Yuvraj was riding the motorcycle, while Chirag was sitting on the pillion seat.
Yuvraj was arrested from Uttarakhand and had two pending criminal cases against him already.
During trial, charges were framed under Sections 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide), 109 (abetment), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 353 (assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC.
However, while the court held Yuvraj guilty, Chirag was let off.
While a copy of the judgment has not been uploaded yet, Chirag’s counsel Yadvinder Singh Sadhu said, “The link of the motorcycle recovered from the spot was never established with Chirag. The vehicle was registered to someone else and while the prosecution had claimed that he had given the motorcycle to the two accused, the person instead claimed it was stolen.”
The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence against Yuvraj on Wednesday.
