Chandigarh: Mayor launches ₹63 lakh water pipeline upgrade

In a move aimed at strengthening the city’s water supply infrastructure, Chandigarh mayor Saurabh Joshi on Saturday inaugurated a 63.7 lakh project for replacing the existing water pipeline in Cheap House, Sector 24-C.

The project involves replacing the ageing cast iron (CI) pipeline with a more durable ductile iron (DI) pipeline, with a focus on improving accessibility, maintenance, and reliability of the water supply system. A key component of the upgrade includes shifting the pipeline alignment from the rear courtyards of houses to the front side, enabling easier inspection and repair work.

According to officials, the project will see the laying of around 1,033 metres of 100-mm (4-inch) DI K-7 pipeline and 449 metres of 150-mm (6-inch) DI K-7 pipeline. The work also includes installation of six DI sluice valves, CI/DI specials, and integration with the existing water supply network.

Speaking on the occasion, Joshi said strengthening basic civic infrastructure and ensuring efficient delivery of essential services remain top priorities for the Chandigarh municipal corporation. He noted that relocating the pipeline would provide greater convenience to residents and help authorities carry out maintenance work more efficiently in the future.
