Chandigarh’s PGIMER eyeing own pharmacy to check overcharging by chemists

In an effort to check overcharging by chemists on its premises, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is planning to set up its own pharmacy shop to provide medicines at affordable rates.

Patients have been reporting that despite discounts, the cost of medicines at PGIMER’s chemist shops is still higher as compared to pharmacies located outside.

PGIMER director Dr Vivek Lal said, “We have been receiving several complaints of overcharging by chemists at the institute. An eight-member committee of consultants has been constituted to address the issue as ‘undercover’ staff. If pharmacies are found overcharging, they will be held responsible.”

“People can submit complaint letters with bills of medicines from the institute and outside at the director’s office. We are also working on an online portal for complaints,” the director added.
