Congress stages peaceful protest against Agnipath Scheme in Ludhiana
Raising slogans against the Union government, they said that the Agnipath scheme was putting the youth’s future in jeopardy
The district Congress staged a peaceful protest against the Union government’s Apnipath Scheme at Jalandhar Bypass on Monday.
Congress leaders, including former MLA Rakesh Pandey, district Congress president Ashwani Sharma and senior deputy mayor Sham Sundar Malhotra led the agitation.
Raising slogans against the Union government, they said that the scheme is playing with the future of youth and putting their future in jeopardy.
“ What will a youngster do after he retires from the army in four years? This scheme will increase unemployment and the jobless youth might get involved in illegal activities,” said Sharma, while adding that they will continue to protest against the scheme.
Congress cries foul over warm delimitation ahead of MC polls
Criticising the Aam Aadmi party (AAP) government for allegedly trying to damage opposition through ward delimitation process before the municipal elections, Congress leaders, led by working president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) Bharat Bhushan Ashu, voiced their opposition to the decision.
A meeting was held under the leadership of Ashu at the mayor’s camp office on Monday, wherein the leaders also decided to take legal action against the move. They said the only motive behind the move was to harm the opposition and benefit the AAP leaders.
Former member of the legislative assembly (MLA) Sanjay Talwar, mayor Balkar Sandhu, councillor Sunny Bhalla among others were present in the meeting.
Congress leaders said ward delimitation, which is carried out after every 10 years, and was done five years ago (ahead of the previous municipal elections). Talwar added that the only motive of delimitation was to change the boundaries and reserve certain wards to benefit AAP.
“Congress will oppose the move and will also take legal action if the state government tries to damage the opposition parties through the process. The congress will make a strong comeback in the municipal elections,” Talwar said
Earlier, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had also opposed the delimitation process.
In the letter received by MC dated June 1, the local bodies department director has directed officials to complete the survey and other necessary formalities for delimitation of wards. The officials have also been directed to list out the total population in each of the 95 wards in the city with separate details of scheduled caste (SC) and backward class (BC) population.
