Duo found hanging in Kajheri bought 7-metre rope hours before: Chandigarh Police
Hailing from Chandrapur in Maharashtra, the duo had arrived in Chandigarh from Dehradun on Wednesday; police had found bus tickets in their pockets
The two youths, who were found hanging in the forest area in Kajheri village on Wednesday, had purchased a 7-metre rope from a nearby shop hours before, police probe has found.
Scanning through CCTV footage from the area, police spotted the duo, aged 26 and 27, visiting a hardware shop in Kajheri village the same morning.
“They purchased a 7-metre rope from a hardware shop. They also bought liquor from a nearby liquor shop and got drunk before taking the extreme step,” said a senior police officer.
Hailing from Chandrapur in Maharashtra, the duo had arrived in Chandigarh from Dehradun on Wednesday. Investigators had found bus tickets in their pockets and recovered their travel bags containing Aadhaar cards and clothes. They had reached the Sector-43 ISBT on Wednesday morning.
The bodies were spotted by passers-by, who alerted the cops around 1 pm. The investigators had found a liquor bottle and glasses near the spot, which is opposite the Sector-43 ISBT. There were no external injury marks on the bodies.
Autopsies conducted
Meanwhile, autopsies were conducted by a board of doctors at GMSH-16 on Thursday after families of both the deceased reached the city. The autopsy reports are awaited.
Police said one of the deceased was the son of the elder brother of a former BJP Union minister. As per families, both youths had left for Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, from their homes on March 14, but went missing thereafter. Families of both the men, the police said, had lodged missing person reports at their home town.
“We are investigating the case to establish the reason behind their extreme step,” said Jaspal Singh Bhullar, station house officer, Sector-36 police station.
4 booked for driving 41-year-old man to suicide
Two days after a 41-year-old man ended his life after jumping off the building of the Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) in Sector 37, where he worked as a technician, police have booked four staff members, including his seniors, for abetment of suicide.
The accused have been identified as Sudhir, Anurag, Harpal Singh and Akshay Jain.
Police said the deceased had accused the four men of harassing him in his suicide note. They were booked following the complaint of the deceased’s elder brother.
A staff member had found the deceased, a resident of Patiala, lying in a pool of blood on the first floor on Tuesday morning. The body was handed over to the family after autopsy on Wednesday.
