Fleeing thieves fire in air after failed burglary bid in Mohali

Two men, who were fleeing after a failed home break-in, opened fire in the air to threaten the house occupants chasing them in DS Estate Colony, Dhakoli, on Monday evening.

Ekta Anand, owner of the house targeted by the burglars, said, “Around 4 pm on Monday, me and my mother-in-law left home for some work. Though my son and his friend were inside the house, we locked the gate. Around 6 pm, two men tried to break open the gate, believing the house to be empty. But as they tried to break the lock, my son and his friend raised the alarm.”
“Alarmed, the burglars immediately tried to flee on their two-wheeler. In an attempt to catch them, with my son and his friend chased them on their motorcycle, when one of the robbers fired a gunshot in the air to threaten them,” the complainant said.
Simarjeet Singh, station house officer (SHO) of Dhakoli police station, said, “CCTV footage from the complainant’s house shows two men trying to break the lock and enter the house. We will soon ascertain their identify and arrest them.”
Meanwhile, a case under Sections 380 (theft in dwelling house) and 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25 of the Arms Act has been registered against the accused.
