Two fresh Covid cases were reported from the district in the last 24 hours, as per the district health department officials on Friday. The total count of cases in the district has reached 87,715. As many as 85,569 patients have recovered in the district till now, while 2,116 have succumbed to the disease. There are 30 active cases in the district. Ludhiana World Bank consultants inspected 50 acres of land acquired for setting up a water treatment plant under the 24/7 canal-based water-supply project in Bilga village near Sahnewal on Friday. The consultants also met the municipal corporation (MC) officials and mayor Balkar Sandhu to iron out the details. The ₹3,200-crore project will help find a resolution to the depleting ground-water levels. MC additional commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal said the World Bank has to float tenders for the first phase of the project, which is why a team had been sent to review the progress of the project. It is expected that the tenders will be floated before the assembly elections. HTC

Three-day twin show kicks off

Ludhiana After the gap of a year, a three-day twin show – the Yarnex exhibition and TexIndia fair – kicked off at Grain Market near the Jalandhar Bypass on Friday to promote innovation, sourcing and fashion in the post-Covid period. Deputy commissioner Varinder Sharma inaugurated the exhibition. As many as 94 companies and exhibitors from different parts of the country are participating in the exhibition, which has been organised in the knitwear hub. HTC

Two-day winter mela starts

Ludhiana To promote handmade craft, municipal corporation (MC) will be organising a two-day ‘Winter Mela’ in Rakh Bagh commencing from December 17. The event will be organised under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) and will continue from 11am to 5pm on December 17 and 18. Different self help groups will exhibit fancy and traditional dresses, home furnishing, among other handmade material during the fair. Other self help groups can also register themselves on the spot for displaying their products during the fair, said MC joint commissioner Poonampreet Kaur. HTC

Close shave for family of five after car catches fire

Ludhiana A family of five had a close shave after the car they were travelling in caught fire in Durgapuri area of Haibowal on Thursday night. No casualty or injury was reported, but the Wagon R was gutted. The victims, who live on Chandigarh Road, had come to the area to visit their relatives. However, when they turned on their car and started its heater while returning at around 11.30pm, the car burst into flames. The complainant, Bawa Jasra, who had alerted the fire brigade, said, “The family came out of the car as soon as they spotted smoke. Within a few seconds, flames had engulfed the car. Residents tried to douse the flames with water buckets and pipes. It took the fire brigade 30 minutes to reach the spot.” Sub-fire officer, Navrang Singh, said. “We dispatched a fire tender from the department headquarters as soon as we received an alert. The fire personnel were able to douse the flames in no time.” HTC

Man, his son booked for beating woman after spat over pet dog

Ludhiana A man and his son were booked for thrashing a woman and her two sons after a spat over a pet dog on Thursday. The accused, Mohammad Shahid of Guru Nanak Nagar of Gill Colony and his son Izhar Alam alias Sonu, were booked on the complaint of their neighbour Geeta. The complainant said that the accused had let loose their pet dog in the street, which had growled at her sons, and when they objected the accused started abusing them. When she went to talk to the accused, they assaulted her and also banged her head against the wall. ASI Baldev Raj, who is investigating the case, said a case has been registered under sections of the Indian Penal Code. A hunt is on for their arrest. HTC
