Ludhiana: Man booked for using social media profiles to defame brother-in-law
According to the complaint, Sharma came to know about objectionable posts concerning him and his father through friends and business associates
The PAU police have booked a man for allegedly creating fake social media accounts and posting derogatory content targeting his brother-in-law, a Ludhiana-based hosiery businessman, and the latter’s father in what police said was a case linked to an ongoing family dispute.
The accused has been identified as Manik Kapoor, a resident of Kitchlu Nagar. The case was registered following a police inquiry conducted on a complaint filed by Mohit Sharma, a resident of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar. According to the complaint, Sharma came to know about objectionable posts concerning him and his father through friends and business associates. He alleged that the accused had created fake accounts on Facebook and Instagram using the name and photograph of a woman and used them to upload derogatory content. The complainant further alleged that the accused tagged his friends, relatives and business associates in the posts, resulting in reputational harm and adversely affecting his business.
Manik filed a complaint against his brother-in-law on August 14, 2025. Following the investigation, the police on Friday registered an FIR against Kapoor under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act. Inspector Rajinderpal Singh said further investigation was underway.
