The court of district and sessions judge Kanwaljit Singh on Monday convicted Uttar Pradesh resident, Shiri Pal, for murdering his brother in February 2021 and awarded him life imprisonment.

According to the first information report, the convict had a money dispute with his brother Taliban. They stayed together at the tubewell room owned by an NRI in Simbal Mazara village. On the intervening night of February 4 and 5, 2021, Shiri Pal killed his brother with a sharp-edged weapon and fled.

On the complaint of Manjit Singh, who cultivated the NRI’s land, and who had been a witness to the migrant brothers’ fights on several earlier occasions, Shiri was arrested and a case under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code was registered against him.

Pronouncing the quantum of sentence, the court said that the accused intentionally murdered his brother.

“Keeping in view the gravity and nature of the offence committed by him, Shiri Pal is not entitled to any leniency. However, not finding it to be a rarest of rare cases warranting capital punishment, the convict is sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 302 of IPC with a fine of 10,000. In case of default of payment of fine, he will have to undergo punishment for one more year,” the court ordered.
