The accused Harpal Singh and Kundan Singh, also of Saharanpur, were known to the victim. Harpal Singh told police that Amit had taken 70,000 from a woman to kill him. However, Amit had demanded money from Harpal in lieu of not executing that deal to eliminate him. Harpal confessed that he and Kundan Singht took Amit to Bharatpur Jogian on the pretext that they would sell their land in the village and pay him.

On April 10, the trio reached the village where the accused strangulated Amit and dumped his body in the forest. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sartaj Singh Chahal said that the police recovered a car used in the crime and deceased’s mobile phone, which the accused had snatched. Both the accused and the victim had criminal record, the SSP added.
