“Shahbad woman Baljit Kaur has told the police that Papalpreet along with a person who could be Amritpal had come to her houses on a white two-wheeler on March 19 and left the next day,” a senior officer of the Kurukshetra police said.

Arrested for harbouring fugitive Khalistani preacher Amritpal Singh and his aide Papalpreet Singh at her Shahbad residence in Kurukshetra district, Baljit Kaur, 30, was in touch with Papalpreet for the past two and a half years, claim investigators.

Baljit originally belongs to Mamumajra village of Kurukshetra district. She along with her 72-year-old father and younger brother Harjinder Singh had shifted to Sidharth colony in Shahbad.

Harjinder is currently posted at the office of Ladwa sub-divisional magistrate while his wife had moved to Canada on a study visa. It is learnt that Harjinder had informed the police about Amritpal’s stay at his sister’s residence. Baljit, a business administration graduate, is unemployed and single. She helps her father in his diary business. Police officials associated with the investigation claim that Baljit was in touch with Papalpreet for the past couple of years as the latter was quite active on social media. The investigators have reportedly discovered that she was pursuing a course in “radical literature” and was also a Khalistan sympathiser as police have also found that she did a few social media videos on historical gurdwaras for Papalpreet, who subsequently shared them on his social media platforms. “One can say she is more than intellectually inclined towards Sikh history and found an intellectual match in Papalpreet,” said an official.

Papalpreet has around 39,000 followers on YouTube channel and Baljit was also among his followers. The two had been in touch for the past two and half years over the phone. While Papalpreet’s YouTube channel is still active, his accounts on other social media platforms Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have been suspended.

Police said that Amritpal had come to Baljit’s residence at 9.40 pm on March 19 on a two-wheeler and left around 12.15 pm on March 20. Police said that Baljit later left the two-wheeler near Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib at Patiala to mislead the law enforcement forces.

“Baljit has told the police that Papalpreet along with a person who could be Amritpal had come to her houses on a white two-wheeler on March 19 and left the next day,” a senior officer of the Kurukshetra police said.

The officer said that the matter belongs to Punjab and the Kurukshetra police has handed over the woman to them and they are investigating this case and no FIR will be registered at Kurukshetra. But as of now, the involvement of any other family member could not be established yet, they said.
