Three days after two men on a bike opened fire outside Brew Bros Microbrewery in Sector 80, police said the extortion call to the outlet owner had come from an international number. A Whatsapp message that followed had come from a local number. Police have also not ruled out the involvement of Lawrence Bishnoi gang members.
Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harjeet Singh said, “We have established that the phone call received by the owner of the microbrewery was made from an international number whereas the Whatsapp messages were from a local number. We have put these under surveillance and have looped in the cyber crime cell, for the purpose of tracing the location and IP addresses.”
The owner of the club, in his complaint to police, alleged that he received a call and a message from Lawrence Bishnoi gang, stating that if ₹40 lakh was not paid, they would kill him and his family.
The SSP said, “We are verifying the involvement of Lawrence Bishnoi gang members in the case. The phone caller claimed that he is from Bishnoi gang but till date, none of the gangsters have claimed the responsibility of firing gun shots. We have not ruled out the gang’s involvement but are also exploring local gangster’s involvement angle.”
Notably, the owners of Brew Bros Microbrewery are close associates of former Mohali MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu, who lost the recently conducted assembly elections to Aam Aadmi Party’s Kulwant Singh.
Police have already registered a case under Sections 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act against unidentified persons.
