17-year-old stabbed to death at Dussehra event in north Delhi’s Timarpur

A 16-year-old student was stabbed to death in Delhi following an altercation at a Dussehra event. One juvenile has been apprehended, and others are being sought.

A 16-year-old Class 10 student in north Delhi’s Timarpur area was stabbed to death by a group of people following an altercation at a Dussehra event in their neighbourhood on Tuesday, the Delhi Police said on Wednesday, adding that one juvenile has been apprehended in the case and raids were ongoing to nab the others.

Deputy commissioner of police (north) Manoj Kumar Meena said Aryan, who goes by a single name, sustained multiple stab wounds in the attack and died on the spot. “By the time police could reach the spot, his attackers had escaped from there. One boy has been apprehended and others have been identified,” Meena said.

The incident took place at about 8.30pm on Tuesday at Sanjay Basti, near Gol Market when Aryan had an altercation with the attackers, who were his acquaintances. It is not what triggered the altercation. Police said one version was that the altercation was around Aryan talking to a girl.

“Our preliminary investigation has revealed that there was an enmity between two groups. Around a fortnight ago, there was a quarrel during which the 16-year-old boy had slapped someone from the other group,” said a police officer aware of the matter.

On Tuesday night, four to five members of the other group met the teenager at Fateh Singh Road outside a Ramlila event venue to resolve the issue. They again entered into a heated argument that escalated into a fight, during which Aryan was assaulted and stabbed, the officer added.

“A case of murder has been registered and several teams have been constituted to nab the suspects. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem,” he added.

After the murder, the teenager’s family along with others staged a protest on the road, alleging that the stabbing took place at a crowded place where police were also present. The protesters dispersed after senior police officers assured them of quick action.
