A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator on Friday called for renaming Delhi as Indraprastha to reflect its cultural legacy.
BJP MLA calls for renaming Delhi to Indraprastha
During the Budget Session of the Legislative Assembly, Wazirpur MLA Poonam Sharma raised a demand through a special mention, urging chief minister Rekha Gupta to pass a resolution in the House and forward it to the Centre for approval. She said the renaming would reconnect the city with its historical roots.
Sharma described the proposal as an important step towards a “cultural renaissance”, asserting that Delhi’s origins date back to the Mahabharata era, when it was known as Indraprastha. She claimed there is cultural and historical evidence to support this.
Sharma said Indraprastha evokes a time when India was regarded as a “golden bird”, and would strengthen cultural identity while aligning with the government’s vision of development.
Earlier in February this year, BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah raising the same demand, after the cabinet approved renaming Kerela to Keralam.
