LG stresses on ‘Zero Waste Colony’ model after visiting Navjeevan Vihar
Delhi LG Taranjit Singh Sandhu urges adoption of 'Zero Waste Colony' model across the city, focusing on low-income areas and public involvement in waste management.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Tuesday directed authorities to replicate the ‘Zero Waste Colony’ model of Navjeevan Vihar across the capital, particularly in unauthorised and low-income group colonies, officials said.

During a visit to Navjeevan Vihar in south Delhi, the LG also directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to support resident welfare associations in adopting decentralised waste management systems. He inspected the colony’s Reduce-Reuse-Recycle (RRR) Centre, decentralised aerobic composting units, source-segregation mechanisms and rainwater harvesting system.
Describing the initiative as one of Delhi’s best practices, Sandhu directed the MCD to explore dedicated funding and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support for Aerobins and RRR centres in less affluent colonies.
Sandhu said government agencies cannot achieve sustainable waste management without active public participation and urged RWAs to prioritise household-level source segregation. He also appreciated the RWA and residents, noting the colony has sustained the decentralised model for nearly eight years and diverted more than a million kilogram of waste from Delhi’s landfill sites.
