No demolition without prior approval: PWD
PWD has ordered officers to halt demolitions without prior approval, emphasizing adherence to norms and strict action against violators.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has directed its officers not to demolish any existing buildings or infrastructure without prior approval, warning that strict action will be taken against violators.

In an office memorandum dated February 17, the department noted instances where demolition occurred without strictly adhering to prescribed norms and procedures.
“All PWD officers are hereby cautioned that no demolition work of any existing building or infrastructure asset shall be carried out without following the due norms, codal provisions, and departmental rules, and without obtaining prior approval of the competent authority,” the order stated.
The department specified requirements, including recording a proper technical assessment, obtaining all statutory clearances and securing written approval from the competent authority. It also mandated adherence to due procedure for the inventory, valuation and disposal of dismantled materials.
The order emphasised ensuring compliance “in letter and spirit” across all concerned offices.
The memorandum added that any violation would be viewed seriously and accountability would be fixed accordingly.
The directive has been circulated to senior officials, including the engineer-in-chief, chief engineers, superintending engineers, and executive engineers across regions, as well as other offices concerned, to ensure uniform implementation of the prescribed norms governing demolition.
