District admin prevents child marriage due for Jan 23 in Gurugram

The Gurugram district administration on Thursday prevented a child marriage in Rathiwas villageafter a receiving a tip-off. The police action, officials said, reinforces its ongoing campaign against the illegal practice.

Officials said the intervention was carried out by deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar. According to officials, the administration received a tip-off about a marriage set for January 23 in the village. A joint team, led by child marriage prohibition officer Madhu Jain and comprising officials from multiple departments, visited the spot to verify the details. During the verification, it was found that the girl was 17-years-old. Following confirmation of the girl’s age, the authorities immediately intervened and stopped the marriage proceedings.
Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, the minimum legal age for marriage is 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys. The DC warned that strict legal action will be taken against violators and appealed to the public to play an active role in reporting such cases.
