Over 1000 challans issued for single-use plastic violations in Gurugram

Gurugram: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) till Saturday issued at least 1,054 fines of ₹7.35 lakh since the ban on single-use plastic (SUP), which came into effect on July 1 till August 6, according to a release issued by the civic body on Monday.

A total of 1,737 kilograms of single-use plastic have been seized from the violators, and ₹4.26 lakh has been collected from them.

On July 1, the government banned the use of 19 single-use plastic items such as plastic spoons, forks, knives, bowls, cups, ice cream sticks, plastic wrapping paper, and thermocol, among others.

According to officials of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram, seven teams have been keeping a check on the citizens to monitor violations since the mid of July, and so far, 24 awareness programmes have been conducted at various schools, sector markets, and residential areas across the city.

“Teams constituted by MCG commissioner Mukesh Kumar Ahuja visit various market areas every day, and fines are being issued to violators, as per the government norms. Also, banned single-use plastic items are being confiscated,” said SS Rohilla, public relations officer (PRO) of MCG.

The civic body officials also said that action against use of single-use plastic has remained steady over the past five weeks, and MCG cumulatively issued 643 fines till July 19. Around 243 more fines were issued in the next 12 days i.e till August 1, and 168 between August 2 and 6.

According to the weight of single-use plastic, MCG issues a minimum challan of ₹500 and a maximum of ₹25,000, said officials.
