Gurugram: Police arrested a 31-year-old resident of Rewari on May 31, accused of duping a Gurugram man of ₹7.30 lakh.

The accused, with two other accomplices, lured the victim with the promise of getting him a Haryana police job. The three claimed to be employed with the Haryana government. They offered to get the victim recruited as a constable, as advertised by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC), against a payment. They even emailed him from fake HSSC ids.

Sudhir Chauhan, a native of Mayan village, Rewari was arrested from Delhi’s Paharganj area. Chauhan was produced in court on Monday and remanded to 14 days judicial custody. Police recovered ₹40,000 and a mobile phone from his possession.

Indivar, assistant commissioner of police (ACP) (cybercrime), said that Chauhan is a B-tech graduate. In 2019, a man identified as Ashish was duped by Chauhan and his associates in a similar manner.

“The accused emailed the victim from a fake HSSC id, created at a cyber cafe in Gurugram. He approached the police once he realised that he was cheated,” the ACP said.

According to police, Chauhan and his accomplices were involved in 50 similar cases. “The accused, along with his accomplices, has cheated many people. He joined the farmer’s movement to hide from the police, and remained incognito at the Kundli border,” ACP Indivar said.

Chauhan was declared a proclaimed offender in 2019, after failing to appear in court. He applied for bail at the Punjab and Haryana high court in 2020, but his plea was rejected.

“He has not visited his parents in the last four years and has been evicted by family members. An anticipatory bail petition was filed in the honourable district and high court, but was rejected,” Indivar said.

The trio posed to be good friends with politicians and shared pictures with them on social media platforms. They shared those pictures with their victims to gain credibility.

Police teams were conducting raids over the last 18 months which finally led to Chauhan’s arrest. Cases have been registered against the three under sections 420 (cheating), 120B (conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code, and section 66 D of Information Technology Act.
