In the second such incident within a fortnight, three unidentified suspects were booked for allegedly stealing an SUV from a man at gunpoint on the Southern Peripheral Road near Sector 71 on Wednesday.

Police said teams have been sent outside the city to trace the suspects.
Police said teams have been sent outside the city to trace the suspects.

The incident took place at 3am when Satya Kiran Rao (45), the complainant in the case, who operates a car showroom in Hasanpur, was returning to his apartment in a condominium in Sector 71 from his showroom. The SUV that Rao was driving did not belong to him and was left at his showroom by a customer for maintenance.

Investigators said Rao stopped at a roadside stall for a cup of tea while waiting for a friend. At that moment, three men arrived on a motorcycle, approached Rao and told him to step outside his vehicle, police said.

When Rao didn’t open the door, one of the suspects pulled out a country-made pistol and pointed it at him through the window, said police.

Rao immediately stepped out and one of the suspects entered the SUV and drove it towards Vatika Chowk, police said. The two other suspects fled from the spot on the motorcycle.

“My mobile phone was inside the SUV. I used another person’s phone at the stall to inform police, after which a patrolling team arrived,” Rao said.

A First Information Report was registered against the suspects under sections 34 (common intention) and 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code and the Arma Act at Badshahpur police station on Wednesday morning.

In a similar incident on December 28, suspects stole the SUV of an industrialist after abducting his driver outside Ambience Mall on national highway 8.

Inspector Madan Lal, station house officer of Badshahpur police station, said teams have been sent outside the city to trace the suspects. “After investigation, it will be clear if the same suspects were involved in the December 28 incident, too,” he added.
