Helper murders plumber for not paying wages

New Delhi:

A 68-year-old plumber was bludgeoned to death by his helper after an argument over payment of wages in outer Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar on Tuesday night.
Police arrested the 32-year-old labourer, who had tried to pass it off as a murder for robbery. Police identified the man as Suraj alias Sarbu, a resident of Chhapra in Bihar.
“Initially, Suraj claimed he had gone to meet the elderly man when he saw him bleeding on the bed and informed neighbours and police. However, footage of a CCTV camera contradicted his claims. When interrogated, he confessed to the crime,” said a police officer, associated with the case.
Deputy commissioner of police (outer north) Gaurav Sharma said the police control room received a call at 9.40 pm, reporting the murder of an elderly man in Swaroop Nagar. The man, Charan Singh, was found dead on the bed. He worked as a plumber and has been living with his helper for the past few months.
“Injuries caused by a blunt object was found on Singh’s forehead. We registered a murder case,” Sharma said.
Police said the movement of Suraj was found suspicious in one CCTV footage. “We arrested Suraj after he confessed to the crime and recovered the iron rod he used to attack Singh,” said the DCP.
During interrogation, the police said, Suraj said he came to Delhi from Bihar 15 years ago and worked at various factories in outer Delhi. Around eight months ago, he met Singh and started working as his helper for R250 per day.
“Singh occasionally gave Suraj R50 or R 100 but never paid his daily wages. Suraj’s wages accumulated in the last seven months but Singh never paid despite his repeated requests,” a police officer said.
On Tuesday night, the two men were drinking liquor when a fight broke out over pending wages and Singh abused him. Suraj allegedly picked up an iron rod and attacked Singh, who died on the spot.
