A police constable allegedly shot dead the owner of a hotel in Meerut and his employee after an argument over the payment of a bill, police said on Wednesday.
Constable Kapil, part of the security detail for Saharanpur district magistrate Pawan Kumar, visited Sher-E Punjab hotel with his colleague at around 11pm on Tuesday.
After dinner, Kapil had an argument with hotel owner Shiv Kumar over paying the bill of Rs 270. Kapil paid only Rs 200, which angered Kumar.
Following the argument, Kapil left the hotel with his colleague but returned soon after. He allegedly fired several shots at Kumar and also shot his employee Hitler when he tried to protect the hotel owner.
Hitler died on the spot while Kumar was taken to a privately run hospital where doctors declared him dead.
“Since the hotel is situated near the railway station, several people gathered at the spot after hearing the gunshots. They caught Kapil with his revolver and handed him over to police,” said SSP (Saharanpur) RPS Yadav.
Kapil was off duty when he allegedly committed the crime, Yadav said.
