Army Major’s car torched after he objects to loud music, 5 arrested

Surveillance footage from the major’s residence showed two people breaking the car’s windows and setting the vehicle on fire.

Five persons were on Monday arrested for allegedly setting on fire an Army Major’s car after the latter objected to loud music being played late at night at a cafe in the Gomti Nagar area of the city, police said.

According to police, Major Abhijeet Singh’s residence is situated close to café Milano, which was hosting a birthday party on its terrace and playing loud music on Sunday night. Around 11 pm, he approached the owner and requested him to turn down the noise. At 12.30 am, he complained about the party to the police since the music was still loud.

The army official claimed in his complaint that the music was stopped when the police came, but was played again 20 minutes after the police left. After Major Singh lodged a second complaint with the owner, seven-eight persons misbehaved with him and threatened him with consequences. The music was then stopped, and he returned home.

Around 3 am, Major Singh went out of his residence upon hearing some noises and saw that his car parked outside was up in flames. “The police reached the spot and doused the flames with the help of a fire tender,” said Dinesh Chandra Mishra, SHO, Gomti Nagar police station.

Surveillance footage from the major’s residence showed two people breaking the car’s windows and setting the vehicle on fire. The major, in his police complaint, held the café’s owner and the manager responsible for the arson.

The five arrested men were identified as Shivam Pratap Singh, 25, Subham Singh, 28, and Rishabh Singh, 20, from Pratapgarh, Krishna, 29, from Jaunpur and Saurabh Srivastava, 26, from Raebareli. They were arrested from a hotel near the Hussainganj area.

An FIR was lodged on the issue at the Gomti Nagar police station under the IPC sections 147 (rioting), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 427 (mischief), 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance), 504 (insult intended to provoke breach of peace and 506 (criminal intimidation) said additional deputy commissioner of police Syed Ali Abbas.
