The bio medical waste dumped in the basement of the eight-storied New Surgery building of SN Medical College and Hospital in Agra caught fire on Tuesday afternoon leading to panic among patients and staff. The patients were promptly rushed out by care takers and fire tenders reached the spot and brought the situation under control, said district magistrate Prabhu N Singh.

“The incident took place at about 12.30 pm on Tuesday when the remains of a burning beedi were thrown near the waste material at basement of building by care takers accompanying the patients. Soon smoke moved through the duct in the basement and spread in the building resulting in panic,” said Prof Prashant Gupta, principal of SN Medical College and Hospital.
He said there has been no loss of life or material and all patients were safe. The patients were shifted to MCH building and pediatrics department where their treatment was on.
“Ambulances present on the premises rushed to the new building and shifted the patients out,” he said.
The fire led to massive panic among kin of patients some of whom were seen shifting their patients without even using stretchers.
