MEERUT The owner of a publishing house and his aunt died in a road mishap on Thursday night while they were chasing the vehicle of Hapur police who were taking away his uncle in connection with a cheque bounce case.
The incident sent a shock wave in TP Nagar area and people gathered at the mortuary, demanding action against Hapur police. Meanwhile, Hapur police, after hearing of the deaths of publishing house owner Mohit Garg and his aunt Chitra Garg, dropped accused Chetan Prakash Garg back home. Chitra was wife of Chetan Prakash and Mohit was his nephew.
SP (rural) Kamlesh Bahadur said that Hapur police, a few in plain clothes, arrived at the Garg house on Thursday night with a non-bailable warrant. They took Chetan Prakash with them in connection with a cheque bounce case.
Chetan’s nephew Mohit Garg, 24, and his aunt Chitra Garg, 43, started chasing the police vehicle on their scooty. A mini truck collided with their scooty near Ghosipur village on Hapur Road. Chitra died on the spot while Mohit succumbed to his injuries in a hospital during treatment. The truck driver fled the spot abandoning his vehicle, the police said.
Angry family members protested at the mortuary and holding the Hapur police responsible for the deaths, demanded action against them.
SP(Rural) said that a probe would be carried out against Hapur police to find out whether or not they followed set norms before taking the accused into custody.
Ajay Gupta, president of Sanyukt Vyapaar Sangh, said that family members told them that policemen arrived at the Garg house in plain clothes along with the complainant and took Chetan with them forcibly.
