LUCKNOW: Upset over the loss of the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, a party office bearer of Kanpur, Narendra Singh alias Pintu, 40, set himself ablaze on the busy Vidhan Sabha Marg in front of the Lok Bhawan building here on Thursday afternoon, said police officials.

The police said the SP office bearer sprinkled inflammable liquid over himself and set it on fire. However, the alert police personnel in plain clothes deployed near the gate of the Lok Bhawan stopped him and were successful in dousing the fire.

The station house officer (SHO) of the Hazratganj Police station, Shyam Babu Shukla, said,“ Narendra Singh was taken to civil hospital in a police van. He is being administered by the doctors there. He sustained minor burn injuries on his neck, face and forearms but is out of danger.”

Singh reportedly raised political slogans before setting himself ablaze. Police recovered a membership card of Samajwadi Party from his possession.

The Samajwadi Party won 125 seats in the 403-member assembly while the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies won 273 seats.
