27-year-old wanted in a 2016 murder case arrested

27-year-old Saumyadas Khirod Das, the final accused wanted in a murder case from seven years ago, has been arrested by Kashimira police. The case involved the kidnapping and murder of Sachin Narayan Mohitet, who had failed to repay a loan of INR39 lakh ($53,000) from Das and others.

MUMBAI: The Kashimira police officials on Wednesday arrested a 27-year-old man wanted in a murder case for around the past seven years. The police officers said that all other ten accused involved in the murder case had been arrested and Saumyadas Khirod Das was the only accused who was absconding and untraceable.

This is the third cold case which has been solved by the Mira - Bhayandar - Vasai - Virar police in the past month.

According to the police, an assistant commissioner of police, and traffic, recollected having heard Das’ name in connection with a case registered with the Saphale police station in Palghar.

“The ACP, who was attached to the Palghar police a few years ago, recollected that he had heard the name Saumyadas Khirod Das in a local case and informed the Kashimira police about him, as he was scheduled to visit him office regarding his driving licence,” said Sadip Kadam, senior police inspector of Kashimira police station.

Kadam said Das was arrested from Evershine Global City in Virar West after he visited the office of the traffic police ACP over a complaint regarding his driving license and provided documents that revealed his mobile number and address.

The police officers said that Saumyadas Khirod Das was the eleventh accused in the murder case of Sachin Narayan Mohitet (25). They said that on July 11, 2016, Das and his 10 accomplices had kidnapped Mohitet from his Goregaon East residence because he was not repaying the loan of ₹39 lakhs which he had taken from Das and others.

The men had then taken him to the office of another accused, Satyakumar Panigrahi in Goregaon and had assaulted him there. They had then taken him to a room at the RK Premium Hotel on Mira Road and again bkidnapped Mohitet from his Goregaon East residence because he was not repaying the loan of ₹39 lakhs ashed him up there to the point that Mohitet died. The men then put the body in Panigrahi’s Toyota Corolla car and dumped it in the Surya River from the bridge near Manor in Palghar.

The Saphale police had recovered the body and registered a murder case.

After investigations, they found ten of the accused, including Panigrahi, but could not trace Das. “As soon as we received Das’s mobile number and address from the traffic department, we tracked him down and arrested him,” said Kadam.

The police said that Das had been living with his family in Virar for the past six years and worked there but succeeded in evading police attention.
