Mumbai: Three homeless people – two men and a woman – were arrested on Thursday for allegedly digging a hole in the sidewall of the French bridge at Opera house, Girgaum.

The police said a local resident had made a video of the incident which helped them track the accused. “The accused, who stayed near the bridge, had made the hole the day it rained in the city to keep their belongings under the bridge. They were also trying to make a permanent shelter under the bridge,” said a police officer. (HT PHOTO)

The accused have been identified as Surajkumar Radhelal Yadav, Kiran Kamble and Nisha Thapa. While Kamble and Thapa sell flowers, Yadav is jobless, as per the police. A case was registered after a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official – Raosaheb Sangolkar – noticed a 3-feet-by-2-feet hole in the bridge.

According to Sangolkar, he had seen a video made by Jagdish Rele in which three people were seen making a hole in the sidewall of the French bridge.

The police said a local resident had made a video of the incident which helped them track the accused. “The accused, who stayed near the bridge, had made the hole the day it rained in the city to keep their belongings under the bridge. They were also trying to make a permanent shelter under the bridge,” said a police officer.

“We have registered a case for mischief by injury to a public road, bridge, river or channel under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and for mischief causing damage to public property under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, 1984,” said the police officer from Gamdevi police station.

The BMC has already repaired the hole and restored the sidewall.
