Bhiwandi: A 45-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator was allegedly attacked with a stone and an iron rod along with a wooden stick by a group of 10 to 15 people at Lahoti Compound, Bhiwandi on Thursday.

The corporator, identified as Nityanand Nadar alias Vasu Anna in the Padma Nagar area in Bhiwandi. He has been a two-term corporator in Bhiwandi, while his first term was in the Shiv Sena and now, he has joined the BJP.

Police said that Vasu Anna left his office at around 9pm with his bodyguard and sat in his car. Another car approached from the opposite direction and the person in the car waved and asked Anna to stop. Thinking that the person must be a party worker, Anna stopped, however, the person attacked him with sticks and stones along with 10-15 others.

The assailants also damaged his Mercedes and fled from the spot, while Anna suffered injuries on his head. The supporters of Anna who came to know about the attack rushed to his office and admitted him to a hospital.

Chetan Kakte Senior police inspector Bhiwandi Police station said, “We received information about the attack at Vasu Anna, we have taken his statement and lodged a case against them.”

Vasu Anna said, “The attack was by party workers of a different lobby of BJP, I had warned the senior leaders of the party of inter-party rivalry and lobbying by a few unhappy party workers.”

DCP, Navnath Dhavle, Bhiwandi city said, “We have arrested one accused Satish Wavilala, 29, while others are absconding. We have formed a team of police personnel to nab them while one team is working on collecting the footage of CCTV cameras which are installed in the locality.”
