Mumbai: A day after ruling party legislators hit Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s poster with footwear in Vidhan Bhavan premises, Speaker Rahul Narvekar on Friday declared that a code of conduct for the legislators will be formulated and those found violating it will have to face action. He also said that he is probing the incident in detail and would give his ruling on Saturday, the last day of the budget session of the state legislature.

On Friday, Congress legislators were aggressive on the issue and there was a pandemonium as the proceedings of the state assembly started. The Congress MLAs were demanding action against the members from the ruling parties.

The MLAs rushed to the well pushing for their demand. To counter them, the members from treasury benches, too, came down to the well leading to disruption of the proceedings twice. Slogans were raised from both the sides terming senior leaders from each other’s party as “thieves”.

The speaker said, “Whatever happened yesterday was inappropriate but what happened today is also not appropriate. I have decided to formulate a code of conduct for the legislators. All the legislators will have to follow them when they are on the premises. Those found violating will have to face action.”

“It was an indecent behavior by the ruling MLAs. The arrogance of power will not be tolerated,” said Nana Patole, state Congress chief, asking the speaker to take action against the ruling MLAs who were involved in hitting Gandhi’s poster with footwear. Narvekar informed the lower House that he has got a report from the Vidhan Bhavan security and is also going through the CCTV footage and will give his decision on Saturday.

The ruling party members including chief minister Eknath Shinde demanded action against all those involved in insulting them and prime minister Narendra Modi in the recent past.

“We have been insulted by Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena ever since we parted ways eight months ago. They use words such as khoke (crores) and gaddar (traitors), he said, adding, “Even prime minister Narendra Modi has been insulted which we will not tolerate and action should be taken against all of them.”

Gandhi stoked a controversy last November when he said that Savarkar would write mercy petitions to be freed from the Andaman cellular jail and also accepted a pension from the British. He also claimed that Savarkar had helped the British government during the freedom struggle.
