Maharashtra plans to promote iconic building construction in Mumbai to enhance its identity, boost tourism, and beautify the city, says Eknath Shinde.

MUMBAI: Maharashtra government wants to encourage construction of iconic buildings in Mumbai that would become the identity of the city. A new policy would be introduced by the government to this end, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde announced in the legislative council on Wednesday.

“Mumbai has a unique identity due to certain iconic buildings built during the British era,” he said and added that the state government has drafted a policy to encourage construction of iconic buildings that would have distinct characteristic. “Mumbai is a world class city, The government feels the need to encourage construction of more such buildings. This will add to beautification of Mumbai and boost tourism.”

As there are restriction on constructions due to provisions of the development control rules that are in force in Mumbai, he has directed the Mumbai civic body to make amendments under the Maharashtra Regional Town Planning Act Section 37 (1).
