Teen steals ₹2.50-Cr diamond earrings to give ‘gift’ to his sisters
The accused teenager, Brijesh Baraiyya was produced before the metropolitan magistrate court on Thursday and remanded to judicial custody
Mumbai: The 19-year-old caretaker of a 77-year-old NRI woman, arrested for stealing diamond earrings worth ₹2.50 crore from a jewellery showroom in Andheri West, told the police that wanted to gift the stolen earrings to his three sisters.

The accused teenager, Brijesh Baraiyya was produced before the metropolitan magistrate court on Thursday and remanded to judicial custody.
Bandopant Bansode, a senior police inspector of Amboli police station, said that the CCTV footage of the jewellery store revealed that Baraiyya was able to steal the 12 pairs of diamond-studded earrings kept in six boxes on Tuesday, as his employer, a 77-year-old UK resident and her partially paralysed 47-year-old son, were busy talking to the salesman, leaving him alone in one corner of the store along with the earring worth ₹2.5 crore.
“While the 47-year-old and his mother were looking at other designs at a separate counter in the store, Baraiyya picked up the boxes and emptied them in his duffle bag before leaving the store with his employers in their car,” said Bansode.
The 19-year-old, who was arrested by the Amboli police along with the earrings in his bag, told the police that he was soon going to go to Bihar to meet his family and wanted to gift something to his sisters and when he saw the earrings lying on the desk in front of him, he grabbed the opportunity and stole them, said the officer.
After the showroom staff reported the theft, Amboli police then got the CCTV recording of the vehicle which was used by the trio to come to the showroom and then leave.
Police tracked Baraiyya to his employer’s house by tracing the owner of the car which was hired by the 77-year-old UK resident and her 47-year-old son, who is partially paralysed, for ₹60,000 per month. The Amboli police searched Baraiyya’s belongings and recovered the stolen items.
