Woman killed, four injured as auto crashes into trailer truck

A 40-year-old woman died and her mother, two younger sisters, and an autorickshaw driver were critically injured after the vehicle crashed into a stationary trailer truck on the Sion-Panvel highway on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 8 am when Mankhurd resident Rakesh Yadav, in his mid-twenties, was carrying four passengers – Parvati Kamble, 58, her three daughters, Vanita Suresh Upadhye, 40, Sujata Upadhye, and Sunita Upadhye – in his auto from Vashi.

A trailer was parked on the left side road near Tata Power substation on the highway and the auto driver could not control the speed and rammed into the vehicle, senior inspector Mahadev Koli of Mankhurd police station said.

The passers-by informed the police control room and a patrolling van took the injured to Rajawadi hospital. Vanita, who had sustained a severe head injury, was declared dead before admission. The other two sisters were later shifted to Sion hospital and admitted to intensive care unit (ICU). Sujata suffered a crack in her skull while Sunita had a broken jaw. The auto driver is serious too and he is in ICU at Rajawadi hospital.

Parvati’s condition is said to be stable and the police have recorded her statement.

Koli said a case against Yadav for causing death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered.

Parvati lives in Mankhurd while her three daughters were married and stayed with their families in Chembur and Ghatkopar. The four - all rag pickers - had been to Vashi at 5 am to sell whatever they had collected the previous day and were returning to their homes, a police officer said.
