Elderly woman hurt as lift free falls at Noida high-rise

Meanwhile, Supertech Limited said there was no freefall of the lift. The elderly woman had lost her balance and fell inside the lift.

Gautam Budh Nagar police on Monday filed an FIR against realty firm Supertech Limited for alleged negligence as a woman was injured after a lift had a freefall at Supertech Supernova housing in Sector 94.

The incident was reported from the second floor of the building when an elderly woman was coming down from the 34th floor to the ground floor, said police. Police named Supertech chairman RK Arora, director Mohit Arora and lift maintenance firm YG Estate following a complaint filed by the victim’s son Piyush Kalra.

Kalra’s mother Anita sustained a fracture and slipped disc and he demanded action against the developer and the maintenance company.

“We have filed an FIR under Section 287 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Supertech Limited and YG Estate for negligence and causing hurt. The elderly woman has sustained injuries. We are probing the matter for further action,” said Ranvijay Singh, additional deputy commissioner of police, Noida.

“We will seek help from experts to determine the scale of the freefall of the lift and how it caused injuries to the victim,” added ADCP Singh. Police said that the victim was about to visit a temple when she met with the accident.

“The technical glitch in the lift was reported to the maintenance agency in the past but no action was taken,” said complainant Kalra.

Meanwhile, Supertech Limited said there was no freefall of the lift. “There was no freefall. The elderly woman had lost her balance and fell inside the lift. We have a contract with Thyssenkrupp elevator company and we are investigating the matter. There was no mechanical or electrical fault in the lift,” said Mohit Arora, director Supertech Limited.
