According to police, five others allegedly involved in the racket were arrested on July 8 and sent to jail. The latest suspect was arrested from Ghaziabad following a tip-off, police said.

Police suspect the gang may have targeted at least 100 people, defrauding them of about 15-20 lakh.

“The gang operated the call centre in Sector 22, where they lured candidates with promises of jobs at reputed aviation companies and admissions to training institutes. They collected money from candidates on various pretexts, including registration, training and processing fees,” said Vijay Singh Rana, station house officer of the Cyber Crime police station.

Police officials said the suspects also created a fake website for the Noida International Airport and misused the names and logos of various institutions to defraud people.

According to police, the money obtained through the fraud was routed through various mule bank accounts and subsequently shared among gang members.

“We are still verifying details of the victims and their bank accounts. We estimate that at least 15-20 lakh was defrauded,” said an investigating officer, requesting anonymity.

According to the FIR registered against the five suspects arrested earlier, police seized 18 mobile phones, including nine Android phones and nine keypad phones, six laptops, a CPU, five headphones, nine SIM cards, two cheque books, four debit cards, one credit card, two company seals, fake certificates and 13 work-calling documents.

A case was registered under Sections 318(4) (cheating), 319(2) (cheating by personation), 238(c) (causing disappearance of evidence of offence or giving false information to screen an offender) and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 66C (identity theft) and 66D (cheating by personation using computer resources) of the Information Technology Act. Further legal proceedings are underway.
