According to official sources, the redevelopment plan envisages provisions for spacious roof plaza, food court, waiting lounge, play area for children and designated space for local products, among other facilities.

“The entire redevelopment plan is likely to be put in place soon with the tendering process. The redevelopment of Ghaziabad railway station will provide the station with an ultra-modern look while incorporating modern facilities for passengers,” said Ghaziabad Member of Parliament General VK Singh (retired).

“During the initial stages of the plan, there was a proposal to convert the inner side of the old platform building into a museum. However, it may not be included under the latest plan. The redevelopment plan will also incorporate beautified approach roads as well,” General Singh added.

Sources said that the redevelopment exercise will integrate various modes of transport such as the Metro and buses and will also integrate both sides of Ghaziabad city (Vijay Nagar and City side) with the railway station.

The ministry on November 3, in an official statement had stated about the redevelopment plan of 40 stations across the country, where work has been awarded and is in progress in different stages such as survey, site mobilisation and construction.

The ministry also stated about 14 stations, including Ghaziabad, “where work is under the tendering stage and likely to be awarded in the next four to five months.”

Sources said that the redevelopment work is likely to cost about 400 crore and is scheduled to be complete in 30 months after the tender is awarded.

“Ghaziabad station caters to the movement of about 280 trains (both sides) and has an estimated daily footfall of about 60,000 passengers. Under the plan, the administrative offices located on platform three and four will be shifted to the entry points of the station and a concourse level will be created where waiting rooms will come up for passengers,” said an officer from the railways, who is part of the redevelopment project but wished not to be named.

Officials added that the initial redevelopment plan is also likely to have a phase two, under which there is a plan to bring the bus station near the station premises so as to create a major transit hub for passengers.

“Further, the movement of commercial vehicles from the goods godown section will be through a separate nine-metre road. This will ensure free movement of passengers and commercial vehicles,” the officer added.
