PNN to rope in sanitation workers to count stray dogs ahead of sterilisation drive

The Prayagraj Nagar Nigam will use sanitation workers to count the number of stray dogs in each locality to help with sterilization efforts.

The Prayagraj Nagar Nigam (PNN) will now take the help of sanitation workers to count the number of stray dogs in each locality of the Sangam city. The counting exercise is expected to help the officials undertake a systematic sterilisation of stray dogs, the population of which has increased significantly in the city areas during last few years.

However, the Nagar Nigam has no information about their exact numbers in each locality. In the absence of exact count, the Nagar Nigam is not able to focus on any particular locality with their excess and take action to sterilise them.

In a bid to know the exact number of stray dogs in each ward, the Nagar Nigam will get them counted. For the purpose, the Nagar Nigam will take help of sanitation workers who are engaged in different localities.

Officials said for counting the number of dogs in each locality, around 4,973 workers will be roped in.

Nagar Nigam animal welfare and veterinary officer Dr Vijay Amrit Raj said the department lacks manpower to count the number of stray dogs in each ward. Now the department will soon take the help of sanitation workers to count the number of stray dogs in different wards. The counting will start after receiving the approval of the senior officials, he added.

The Nagar Nigam has started sterilization drive of stray dogs since July. Till now the Nagar Nigam has sterilised over 2,700 stray dogs in different wards.

The agency responsible for sterilisation of stray dogs has its facility at Karelabagh area. The dogs are kept there and taken care for some days before being they released in the same locality again. The agency carries out sterilisation of 15 to 20 dogs each day.
