Hooch deaths: Six die in Bhagalpur, Gopalganj toll climbs to 10

Six people have died in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district after allegedly consuming spurious liquor while the toll in the latest suspected hooch tragedy in Gopalganj has risen to 10 with six more deaths, police said.

The dead in Bhagalpur includes a man, Avinash Kumar Shah, who worked as a driver at Sabaur police station. His wife Aarti Kumari said he consumed liquor regularly.

Dr Asim Kumar Das, superintendent of Mayaganj hospital where Shah was treated, told reporters that he died after vomiting.

Bhagalpur district magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen said a probe was underway. “Family members of two of the deceased said they were suffering from health ailments. We are probing all angles,” he said.

Meanwhile, the toll in the suspected hooch tragedy in Gopalganj rose to 10 on Monday with the death of six more people, police said. Four people had died between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Superintendent of police Anand Kumar most of the bodies were cremated while family members of some of he victims as well as doctors did not confirm consumption of liquor as the cause.

Liquor was banned in Bihar in April 2016.
