The Pimpri-Chinchwad police have registered a case against members of a “jaat panchayat” (group of caste leaders) of Kanjarbhat community for boycotting a family and levying a “fine” of 15 lakh upon them. The case was registered by the affected family with the help of Andhshradha Nirmoolan Samiti (ANiS), an organisation established by slain rationalist Dr Narendra Dabholkar.

A complaint in the matter was lodged by a man named Sushant Sunil Nagarkar (26) a resident of Moshi market area in jurisdiction of Pimpri Chinchwad police.

The accused including relatives of immediate family members of the girl along with five others from their village.

Nagarkar is the estranged husband of the 21-year-old daughter of the ‘jaat panchayat’ leader. The two got married in November 2019 and during her pregnancy and ongoing strain of their marriage, her mother and brother took her away from Nagarkar’s house, according to his complaint.

On February 1, the panchayat gathered in Moshi market and called for boycott of the family is they fail to pay a fine of 15 lakh.

Sachin Nagarkar, brother of the complainant, said, “It was a private matter. The panchayat directly levied a fine on us and asked the community members to boycott us.”

A case under Sections 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 of Maharashtra Protection of People from Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2016 was registered at Bhosari MIDC police station.
