Last week, the advisory committee submitted a final draft of the Marathi Language Policy 2023. It was presented by the committee head and littérateur Laxmikant Deshmukh to Deepak Kesarkar, minister of Marathi language of Maharashtra.
Deshmukh said, “The draft was prepared in a way that the Marathi language should become the language for gaining knowledge, help in public transactions, and administrative purposes. Considering all these things, we have made some recommendations in the draft.”
The committee which was reformed on December 30, 2021, was earlier headed by renowned littérateur Nagnath Kotapalle, and Sadanand More, who significantly contributed to preparing the draft.
“The recommendation for setting up the university was earlier accepted by the state government; however, no work has been done yet. We are hoping that work will be undertaken as soon as possible. Initially, it was said to be set up in Pune or Mumbai, however, it is now recommended that each district should have a Marathi language centre under this university so that it is accessible to all,” said a committee member.
Shamshuddin Tamboli, a member of the committee said, “We have also recommended various initiatives to encourage reading habits among the masses, especially students and for this, library culture will be promoted. Also, Marathi language teaching should be made mandatory for the non-Marathi schools.”
The panel also considered the technology aspect, including translation and learning as it has become an important part of our day-to-day life. “Another recommendation was made for the conservation of local dialects in Maharashtra including the tribal community languages,” said Tamboli.
