Navale bridge accident prompts authorities to widen service roads

Following last week’s fatal accident near Navale Bridge, authorities have taken measures to prevent future mishaps.
On Monday, district collector Jitendra Dudi approved the PMRDA’s petition to acquire 54 gunthas of land for the extension of the exterior service road to 200 metres. The project will cost approximately ₹5-6 crore.
The PMC, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), district administration and NHAI have taken several measures in the aftermath of the accident.
Thousands of commuters travelling between Mumbai and Satara use the Navale bridge every day. However, residents of Katraj, Narhe, Ambegaon, Warje and Wadgaon do not have access to the outer service road, leading to heavy congestion.
PMRDA had sent the land acquisition proposal to the district administration about six weeks ago. The collector approved it on Monday.
Commenting on the development, district collector Dudi said there is regular congestion at the spot, which increases the possibility of accidents in the area.
“There is a need for a bigger service road near the Navale Bridge, and NHAI had demanded the acquisition of 54 gunthas of land for the project. The proposal for the external service road has now been cleared,” Dudi said.
