PMC begins retrofitting three roads
The department has received ₹13 crore under the FC grant while the total budget for retrofitting the three roads is ₹22.30 crore
The road department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started the process of retrofitting three roads after receiving funds under the Finance Commission (FC) grant. The department has received ₹13 crore under the FC grant while the total budget for retrofitting the three roads is ₹22.30 crore which will be used to revamp the roads with wider footpaths and a cycle track.

Dinkar Gojare, executive engineer, PMC road department, said, “We have looked at roads that are more than 24 metre wide which is why we have selected stretches at Bibwewadi and Bavdhan and a stretch of the Bhau Patil road. The three roads see major traffic which adds to the air pollution. The roads are also part of the Pune street programme where we are taking a holistic approach to the design of streets under the ‘urban design for Pune streets programme’. We have identified a total 100 km of streets all over Pune city. Under this, we have completed 50 km of road network in the first phase.”
“We looked at roads without good footpaths, and roads with unplanned edges and undulations. Hence after the survey, we began work with Bibwewadi about a month-and-a-half ago. The new retrofitted road follows the norms of non-motorised transport such as wide footpaths for pedestrians, plantations, edge-to-edge development, and also a bicycling track. We have completed half of the 1.5 km stretch and will finish the rest within this year,” Gojare said.
The PMC is spending ₹ 8.7 crore on the development of a 1.5 km stretch in Bibwewadi, ₹6 crore on a 1 km stretch in Bavdhan, and ₹7.5 crore on a 1.25 km stretch of the main Bhau Patil road. The road department has assured that it will complete retrofitting of all three roads within one-and-a-half years.
