Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has come out in the support of Ishan Kishan after Indian opener Shubman Gill was preferred over the wicketkeeper-batter for the 1st One Day International (ODI) against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. From former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad to ex-cricketer Mohammad Kaif, several household names of the Indian cricket fraternity had slammed Rohit Sharma and the team management for dropping Kishan in the 1st ODI of the three-match series at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

Kishan, who failed to retain his place in the ODI XI of the Rohit-led side, had notched up a historic double century in India's previous series against hosts Bangladesh. Speaking ahead of the 1st ODI between India and Sri Lanka, skipper Rohit had suggested that opener Gill and Shreyas Iyer will get a long run in the 50-over format. Though Rohit assured that Kishan will remain in the mix for the hosts, the Indian opener was made to warm the bench in the 1st ODI against Sri Lanka.

With India having a packed ODI calendar in the World Cup year, former Indian skipper Ganguly believes that Kishan will get a chance to feature for the Rohit-led side. “I’m sure he (Kishan) will get his chance. His time will come," Ganguly was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI.

At a time when former cricketers have openly criticized Kishan's non-selection in the Sri Lanka ODIs, Ganguly feels it's up to the Indian think tank to decide which player should get a chance to feature in the playing XI. “I don’t know… It’s difficult for me to say. In India, we have too many opinions, let (head coach) Rahul Dravid and (skipper) Rohit Sharma decide. People who actually play the game should actually decide who’s the best,” Ganguly added. Rohit-led India will meet Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI on Thursday at the Eden Gardens.
