Despite a low-scoring game, it was a thriller of a contest at the Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns which Australia won by just two wickets. Put to bat first, Mitchell Star removed Martin Guptill early before New Zealand found some stability from Devon Conway and captain Kane Williamson. But Glenn Maxwell and Josh Hazlewood picked seven between themselves as the pair ran through the Kiwi middle and lower order to restrict them for just 232 for nine in 50 overs. In reply, Trent Boult made a terrific start picking three wickets with the new ball in his first three overs before a double whammy from Matt Henry saw the Aussie being reduced to 44 for 5 in 12 overs. But Alex Carey and Cameron Green dug deep with their 158-run stand to help Australia wrap up the chase with 5 overs to spare.
