Commentary

4:40 PM IST Right then, the 2nd T20I between India Women and South Africa Women at Chennai has been officially called off due to rain and it is not the result any player or fan ever wants to see especially when the game was so nicely set up after the first innings. However, this result ensures that South Africa Women cannot lose the T20I series as they have a 1-0 lead and there's just one more game to go. The Proteas got the job done in the first game and their series-losing streak on this tour has ended too. India Women would have wanted to get back on level terms before the final game but will now have to win the game to end the series on 1-1. The 3rd and final T20I will be played at the same venue in Chennai on Tuesday, 9 July and will begin at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT). However, as usual, you can join us a lot earlier for the build-up of that clash. Till then, take care and goodbye!
4:35 PM IST UPDATE 10.06 pm IST (4.36 pm GMT) - IT IS OFFICIAL! RAIN HAS PLAYED SPOILSPORT AND THIS MATCH HAS BEEN ABANDONED!
4:27 PM IST UPDATE 9.57 pm IST (4.27 pm GMT) - We are getting closer and closer to that cut-off time of 10.13 pm IST (4.43 pm GMT) and it seems that the rain has again picked up and the crowd is starting to make its way out of the venue. No official word yet but we shouldn't be far away from some concrete news from the stadium. Stay tuned.
4:11 PM IST UPDATE 9.41 pm IST (4.11 pm GMT) - Uh, oh! The drizzle seems to have gotten a bit thicker and steadier again. Not what everyone was hoping for but the ground staff are still doing the rounds and working hard to keep the field of play ready at the earliest once the rain stops. Stick around as we should get some official news pretty soon.
4:02 PM IST UPDATE 9.33 pm IST (4.03 pm GMT) - We have already started losing overs for a few minutes now and the official cut-off time for a five-over chase is 10.13 pm IST (4.43 pm GMT). Also, there's some news from the ground that the drizzled has reduced quite a bit and the umpires are inpsecting the ground.. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that we do get a complete game in. Stay tuned for more updates.
3:49 PM IST UPDATE 9.19 pm (3.49 pm GMT) - No news regarding the start of the chase yet but it seems that the drizzle has actually picked up. The visuals do show that more of the ground is covered at the moment and not just the pitch. Unfortunately, it seems we are in for a longer delay than anticipated at first. And, as we wait for updates from the ground, let us take you back to the Indian Men's team that featured early on in their 2nd T20I against Zimbabwe. After being handed a humbling defeat, the fairly young and inexperienced Indian brigade bounced back quickly. Abhishek Sharma was the star of the show as he struck a brilliant ton and both the batting and bowling was sound. India scored 234 runs and bundled out the opposition for 134 runs, rounding up an impressive 100-run victory.
3:34 PM IST UPDATE 9.04 pm IST (3.34 pm GMT) - Well, well! The innings break is over and we expected to see the players coming out for the chase but instead, the pitch is under covers. It seems to be just a drizzle at the moment and the umpire is seen having a discussion with the ground staff. For now, the start of the chase is delayed but hopefully, it will be a prompt resumption just like we had before the first ball was bowled. Stick around for more updates.
3:33 PM IST …THE RUN CHASE…
3:29 PM IST Right then, India Women needs 178 to get a win and level the series. The pitch is a belter and with dew around, batting should not be a problem. South Africa Women will find it hard to grip the ball and India Women will want to cash in on that. So, Can India Women get the job done or will South Africa Women take the series and make it 2-0 with a game to go? We shall find out. Join us in a bit for the second essay.
3:28 PM IST Anneke Bosch is down for a chat. She says that the outing was good but it was a bit difficult for her as the pitch was slower than expected and then she tried to just build a partnership later on. Adds that they are happy with the score on the board but do need to bowl well. Mentions that with the start they had in the Powerplay, they were looking at a similar score to the one in the last game but had to re-assess as the pitch got slower later on.
3:27 PM IST India Women made four changes to their lineup and were slightly better with the ball today. They gave away few freebies at the start of the innings but came strongly by picking wickets at regular intervals. At one stage, South Africa Women looked like crossing the 200-run mark but some tight bowling did not allow that for them. Deepti Sharma was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 20 in her spell while Shreyanka Patil and Radha Yadav picked one each. Pooja Vastrakar bowled with good pace and troubled the Proteas batting. She ended with 2 for 37 in her 4 overs.
3:22 PM IST A hat-trick of boundaries in the final over the innings takes South Africa Women to a powerful score of 177 for 6 in their 20 overs. Having sent into bat first, South Africa Women skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits started on an aggressive note and added 43 for the first wicket in just over 4 overs. Wolvaardt was dismissed for a quick-fire 22 but Tazmin Brits carried on and slammed her second fifty of the T20I series. Marizanne Kapp, Anneke Bosch, and Nadine de Klerk all played their part in the middle overs while Annerie Dercksen belted three boundaries in a row to end the innings on a high.

1:43 PM IST The Supersopper puts the finishing touches to the mop-up job and it is time for Take 2! The umpires are out in the middle and the players of India Women can be seen in a huddle. It will be the pairing of skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits to open the innings for South Africa Women. Pooja Vastrakar has been handed the new ball and is raring to go. Let's play...
1:38 PM IST UPDATE 7.08 pm IST (1.38 pm GMT) - The umpires are still out in the middle and are standing without umbrellas. Only the Hessian is covering the pitch and all of a sudden, the mizzle seems to have stopped and covers are coming off as well. It looks like we will have a prompt restart. Play will officially commence at 7.15 pm IST (1.45 pm GMT) which is just 5 minutes or so away and there is a huge roar from the crowd.
1:28 PM IST UPDATE 6.58 pm IST (1.28 pm GMT) - All in readiness for this crunch encounter to begin! Oh, wait! Scratch that, the light drizzle which has been around the whole day is back. The players are just staying in the dugout for now, raring to get onto the field of play but will just have to wait for a bit. The pitch though is covered for now and the umpires and ground staff are near the deck, waiting for things to unfold. The broadcasters take this break to show visuals from a bit earlier on where skipper Harmanpreet Kaur presented the India cap to Uma Chetry as she is all set to make her WT20I debut. What a proud moment for Chetry and all of Assam. For now, the start of play has been delayed but it doesn't seem like an extended break, not at least for now. Stay tuned.
1:15 PM IST Smriti Mandhana is down for a chat. She says that the build-up to the series has been good and they have been working hard for the last couple of years and know what routines to follow before the games and the batting camp they had was very useful as well. Adds that there are days when she feels very composed and there will be days when it doesn't click she has been timing the ball well in the last few months and wants to keep going and trust the process. Ends by saying that they have been thinking about the World Cup for about five to six months and as a team, getting into a winning habit will be amazing and they have a very balanced squad as well.
1:13 PM IST Laura Wolvaardt, the South Africa Women's skipper says that there are back-to-back games so they got a good rest and had a short meeting today on how to go about things. Adds that they showed great intent with the bat and assessed the conditions nicely. Mentions that they wanted to bowl as well with the rain around but hopefully batting first works well for them again. Ends by sharing that they are going unchanged.
1:13 PM IST The India Women skipper, Harmanpreet Kaur says that they will bowl first given the conditions. Adds that overall it has been a tough fight from South Africa in this series and in a T20 game, a couple of players can make a difference. Mentions that it is all about that particular day and the performance on that day. Informs that Richa Ghosh is out due to her head injury and Uma Chetry will make her debut and they have three other changes as well.
1:09 PM IST South Africa Women (Unchanged Playing XI) - Laura Wolvaardt(C), Tazmin Brits, Marizanne Kapp, Chloe Tryon, Nadine de Klerk, Anneke Bosch, Annerie Dercksen, Eliz-Mari Marx, Sinalo Jafta(WK), Ayabonga Khaka, Nonkululeko Mlaba.
1:09 PM IST India Women (Playing XI) - Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Uma Chetry(WK) (on debut, in for Richa Ghosh), Harmanpreet Kaur(C), Deepti Sharma, Pooja Vastrakar, Radha Yadav, Sajeevan Sajana (in for Dayalan Hemalatha), Arundhati Reddy (in for Renuka Singh), Shreyanka Patil (in for Asha Sobhana).
1:01 PM IST Toss Update - India Women have won the toss and opted to BOWL.
12:31 PM IST India Women, on the flip side, were sloppy in the field during the first game and bowled plenty of looseners. Only Pooja Vastrakar and Radha Yadav could manage a couple of wickets while the rest of the bowling went for plenty. During the chase, India started aggressively and were pretty much ahead of the required rate with Smriti Mandhana smashing an attacking fifty but a few quiet overs saw them lose three wickets in the first 10 overs. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues tried hard and added 90 runs but fell short by 12 runs in the end. Harmanpreet Kaur and his team will hope to bounce back and level the series. Can they, do it? Let’s find out. Toss and team news in a bit. Stay tuned!
12:31 PM IST Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of the second T20I in this 3-match series between South Africa and India Women from the M.A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The visitors, Proteas Women, got their first win of the tour and will be pumped with their effort. Batting first in the opening game of the T20I series, South Africa Women posted a huge score of 189 on the back of runs from Tazmin Brits, Marizanne Kapp, and Laura Wolvaardt. With the ball, everyone chipped in and kept picking wickets at crucial times to keep India Women on the backfoot. South Africa Women have the momentum behind them and will hope to make it 2-0 and clinch the T20I series with a game to go.
12:30 PM IST …MATCHDAY…
2:54 PM IST It is time for the second T20I of the three-match series between India Women and South Africa Women at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. After losing the series opener, Harmanpreet Kaur and Co will need to turn things around quickly to keep their hopes of winning the series alive. Laura Wolvaardt and her troops have put an end to their wait for their first win on this tour of India and will be riding high on confidence as they look to seal the series. In the first game, after being put into bat, Tazmin Brits and Marizanne Kapp powered the visitors to 189, the highest-ever total for South Africa against India in Women's T20Is. With the ball, they were put under the pump early on but fought back by applying the squeeze in the middle phase to win the game by 12 runs. As for India, yes, they played too many dots in the middle overs, but more than that, it was the bowling and fielding that let them down. In the bowling department, Pooja Vastrakar was the shining light and if India were to bounce back, the rest, especially the spin trio of Radha Yadav, Deepti Sharma and Asha Sobhana, would have to pull up their socks. With the bat, Shafali Verma could not have a significant impact, but much of the run-scoring burden will fall on Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur. The hosts will also be concerned about the availability of Richa Ghosh, who left the field with a concussion during India's bowling effort. For South Africa, Tazmin Brits' 81-run knock ended her slump on the tour of India and she will be keen to keep the momentum going. Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp have held the innings together at different times throughout this tour and will need to continue to do so. With Kapp on the verge of a return to bowling, her presence will certainly bolster the bowling department. The first T20I saw a collective effort from the likes of Ayabonga Khaka, Chloe Tryon, Nadine de Klerk and Nonkululeko Mlaba, and a similar bowling display will be needed for South Africa to get past India. Will South Africa conjure up another spirited performance to wrap up the series? Or will it be India who fight back to take the series to the decider? We shall find out soon enough.
