Alastair Cook, who needed two runs to reach the landmark, scored two runs off Umesh Yadav’s first delivery with a push to cover, having won the toss and elected to bat in the final game of a series the visitors trail 3-0.
The left-handed opener, who scored his first Test run in India having made his debut in Nagpur a decade ago, is playing in an England record 140th Test. The England captain had scored 387 runs at over 38 in this series with a century and a fifty ahead of the Chennai Test. Cook was out for 10, edging Ravindra Jadeja to Virat Kohli at slips.
England’s highest Test run-getter will have some satisfaction on a tour in which little has gone right for him with speculation rife the left-handed opener, who turns 32 in a week, will quit captaincy after this tour.
