India vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Day 2 highlights: Pant and Iyer help IND finish Day 2 with 80-run lead

Pujara and Kohli have looked more comfortable on this pitch than arguably any of the batters who have played thus far in this Test match.

Kohli is on 10 off 24, Pujara on 18 off 26. There have been some interesting bowling changes from Bangladesh, Shakib had come in for just one over it seems and it is now Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz alternating. 

He becomes the eighth Indian batter, and only seventh among those active, to have crossed the mark. Does so by running three off the second last ball of the 19th over. India are 53/2 in 19 overs. 

India are 48/2 in 18 overs. Pujara will be on strike, he is on 12 off 14 and so he has been going at a good click. Kohli is on four off 12. Pujara can cross 7000 career runs in this over, he is four runs away from the mark. 

Might be a bit streaky but the former India captain has got his first boundary of the day. Short of a length outside off from Khaled, Kohli pushes it away from his body but could not keep it down. It luckily falls in the gap behind point and goes to the boundary. Kohli gets off the mark with that shot. 

What a start this is for Bangladesh! Taijul Islam has dismissed both openers within the first half an hour of the day. Gill falls for 20 off 39, India 38/2 in 15.1 overs.

Big appeal for LBW from Bangladesh, umpire turns it down but then they successfully review that call. Taijul Islam pitches the first ball of the 14th around off and it angles in. Rahul defends forward trying to get to the pitch of the ball, it hits him on the pads. Ball tracking shows that the ball would have hit middle and leg. Rahul falls for 10 off 45, India are 27/1 in 13.1 overs.

It has been tough so far for the Indian openers, Gill has been beaten multiple times. But Rahul capitalises as soon as he sees a chance, length ball from Taijul outside off, Rahul rocks back and punches it through extra cover for four. 

Both players get a single each in that over. Taijul Islam comes in from the other end.

Shubman Gill taking strike, KL Rahul at the other end. Khaled Ahmed comes in for the ninth over of the Indian innings and he slices Gill in half first up! The balls nips back in from a good length, beats the inside the edge and fizzes over the off stump. 

The second half of 2022 has been all about Virat Kohli ending his century droughts. He scored his first ever T20I century during the T20 World Cup, his first ODI century in over three years during this tour, and now stands a chance at finishing the year with a Test century as well. Kohli's last century in the longest format had come in India's first-ever pink ball Test against the same opposition in Kolkata. 

Three roughs pretty close to the off stump thanks to Jaydev Unadkat, says Sanjay Manjrekar. “All three are in a significant and in fact one of them is actually in the danger so a slight oversight from the umpires. Unadkat pretty lucky to get away with it,” he says. 

Allan Donald can be seen having a pretty animated discussion with Taskin Ahmed. How Bangladesh fare in this Test will be pretty dependent on what Bangladesh's opening bowlers are going to do.

Unadkat's first and only Test match before this one came all the way back in December 2010 against South Africa in Centurion. The Indian bowlers were taken to the cleaners in that game and Unadkat was no different. He bowled 26 overs, conceded 101 runs and took no wickets. It was quite a different story yesterday. He was giving all kinds of problems to the Bangladesh openers with his short deliveries and got his first wicket in the form of first Test centurion Zakir Hasan. He then got the big wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim to make it two for the innings. 

It is not like India have suffered in Kuldeep's absence but former players and experts are flabbergasted by the spinner being dropped for this Test despite his player of the match performance in the last one. Many of them seem to be of the sentiment that dropping a player who has been struggling for confidence over the last two and a half years right after he delivers a player of the match performance in a format he didn't get to play too often even when he was a regular in the Indian limited overs sides, might not actually be great as far as his confidence is concerned. India may have missed a trick in showing good man management here. 

A number of Bangladesh players got starts yesterday but only Mominul Haque managed to convert that into something significant. They had fairly good partnerships throughout their top five but then fell in a heap in the final session and thus, those stunted starts cost them dear. India would be hoping that their top five can do better and their tail certainly has more quality than Bangladesh's does. We could be in for another intriguing day of Test cricket in Mirpur.
