But overall, that seems to be it as far as his engagement with the team goes. Kohli is happy being away from the game; he is content. India will next play an ODI series in August, so expect him to be back. But until then, expect him to stay low. He wasn't at the WTC final, and nor will he turn up for any of the five Tests. Until and unless a miracle at Bourbon Street happens, that is.

Joe Root cannot be kept quiet, especially when it's against India. Besides, the former England captain has been on an unstoppable run-scoring streak over the last 18 months, scoring over 700 runs in his previous seven home Tests – so much so that Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most Test runs ever – something that looked untouchable until a few years ago, is landing in increasing danger. The second reason is his form. Arshdeep hasn't played much First-Class cricket in the lead-up to the series, but his experience with Kent brings a lot to the table. They registered their first win here in 1986, beating England by 279 runs and 16 years later in 2002 by a convincing margin of an inning and 46 runs. The last time India and England played a Test match here was in 2021, where, under Virat Kohli, India suffered an embarrassing defeat by an innings and 76 runs. It was during this Test match that India were bowled out for 70 – their lowest total at this venue. People have discarded him, given up on him even before the guy has stepped onto the field. Former India cricketers such as Anil Kumble and Dinesh Karthik have expressed their concern, urging him to do this, do that, prioritise batting, find his mojo and whatnot? Few, however, have backed him, such as Kapil Dev and the incomparable Sachin Tendulkar. Rightly enough, Gill has yet to prove his credentials as a batter away from home – more so in SENA nations – but did Indian cricket have an option after Rohit Sharma retired? Jasprit Bumrah has a history of back injury, and KL Rahul has been tried and tested already. Rishabh Pant could have been a contender, but if the BCCI felt it's better to have a young captain taking over who can lead in the future, there's absolutely no harm. Back him, just like you backed Ganguly, Dravid, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.

He kept on mentioning being part of the Playing XI, rather than just the squad. Of course, this by no means is a guarantee that Nair is set to play his first Test match for India since 2017, but this clearly reflects his mindset. Besides, yesterday, Nair was seen having a long go in the nets, whereas Sai Sudharsan simply warmed up. And why not? I mean, Nair has excelled while batting in English conditions. He may have yet to play a Test match, but for India A, he struck two double centuries against England Lions in two years. How do you leave him out? Well, the answer is: You don't.

It will be bright, it will be sunny with no chances of rain whatsoever. As has been the narrative in the lead-up to the contest, Leeds will be hot, with dry conditions awaiting the batting team. But then, of course, this is the English summer. And the definition of summer is a lot different to the one in India. English summers are usually full of rain, and the 2019 World Cup was a prime example of it, where as many as eight matches were washed out.
