Jadeja had earlier struck back for India with two quick wickets after Daryl Mitchell and Will Young took New Zealand's lead over 50 in their second innings. The pair put up a partnership of 50 runs and it ended with Ravindra Jadeja dismissing Mitchell thanks to a sensational catch from Ravichandran Ashwin. India have thus picked up their third wicket of the session and the fourth wicket of the New Zealand second innings overall. Jadeja followed that up by cleaning up Tom Blundell shortly thereafter.

India were all out for 263 runs with a lead of 28 runs. Ajaz Patel took a five-wicket haul while Washington Sundar stayed unbeaten on 38 runs off 36 balls. Shubman Gill looked set to score his sixth Test century but the devils in the pitch increased manifold in the second session of the day. Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips rattled away the wickets and Gill fell on 90. India reached Lunch on Day 2 of the third Test against New Zealand, scoring 195/5 in 43 overs, trailing by 40 runs. Shubman Gill was at the crease on 70 off 106 balls while Ravindra Jadeja was at the other end on 10 off 18. Gill and Rishabh Pant's quickfire 96-run stand off 114 balls was the defining feature of the first session on Day 2 of the third Test between India and New Zealand. Both players got to their half-centuries quickly, with Pant especially bludgeoning his way to 50 in 36 balls.

New Zealand slowed things down after the drinks break though, with Ish Sodhi leading the chokehold. Both Gill and Pant were given big reprieves with fielders dropping easy catches off them. However, Sodhi finally ended Pant's stay by trapping him LBW on 60 off 59 balls. India then sent in Ravindra Jadeja ahead of Sarfaraz Khan despite the Wankhede Stadium being the latter's domestic ground.

Pant and Gill both got to their fifties within the first hour of play as they put some pressure back on the New Zealand bowlers at the start of Day 2. Gill got to 50 in 66 balls while Pant, who started the day on one run, got there in just 36. Pant was especially belligerent as he took the partnership beyond 50 and took India's deficit below 100 in just over half an hour after the start of play.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Ish Sodhi given the ball for the first time in the 30th over, incredibly. Gill takes a single off the first ball and raises his 50 in 66 deliveries. What an innings this has been. Pant has been going big guns and Gill has held up one end while ensuring that he doesn't go into a shell himself.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Well this is quite a start to the day. Pant reverse sweeps the fifth ball of the 28th by Ajaz to the boundary for a four. Then Pant skips down the track again and blasts Patel back over his head for yet another six. 50 partnership is up in 56 balls and India also trail by less than 100 runs now. India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: DROPPED! Gill given a respite in the most incredible way!

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Wow Mark Chapman is the substitute fielder. He is normally a very safe pair of hands, but he has made an absolute meal of a straightforward catch to give Gill a respite. Phillips would've got a huge wicket with his very first ball of the day. Gill decides to skip down the track and smash Phillips all the way to the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai very first ball, taking a look at the bowler as he bowls for the first time in the day seemingly not being something that Indian batters don't do any more. It goes up in the air, Chapman comes charging in from the long-on boundary, the ball goes right through his hands, hits his body and goes to the ground. Gigantic reprieve there. Batters run a single and then a rather uneventful over after that. Gill on 47 off 60 balls at the end of it, Pant on 30 off 27.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: SIX! Pant is laying into Ajaz

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Gill gets off strike second ball of the 26th over, then Pant charges down the track in that typical way he does and sends the ball over long-on for the first six of the day. The last ball hits him high on the pads and then asks for the physio. It looks like Pant has got something in his eye. He takes a while to recover and even when he dons the helmet, it looks like he still isn't fully satisfied. And moreover, Glenn Phillips is bowling his first over of the day, he had dismissed Pant in the last match, remember. Gill is on strike though. Pant is on 27 off 24, Gill is on 45 off 57.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: A risky single off overthrows to end the 24th over

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: India are asserting themselves but they might do better than throwing their wicket away trying tight singles. Pant goes down on a knee and laps the first ball of that over from Ajaz to fine leg for a four. Then he gets an inside edge to where short leg would've been but Latham had just moved that man behind square after that boundary. Then Gill gets a half-volley on the pads last ball, it is sent back to the bowler who fires the ball at the striker's end. Mitchell is not able to stop it effectively and the batters run a quick single. The throw never came but well, that was effectively misfield and runs off them are always risky. Pant seemed to be hobbling towards the end of that run and he goes and has a word with Gill while the pair have some fluids after that over. Strangely enough, replays show that it may have been Pant who called for that single.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: FOUR! Gill brings up India's 100 in style

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Just a gorgeous shot that. Three dot balls to start the third over of the day, with the third ball taking Gill's inside edge and bat pad and going towards the empty silly point area. Then he gives Ajaz the charge and goes inside out over extra cover, a few bounces and it goes past the boundary to bring up India's 100. Two more dot balls after that, Gill is on 36 off 46, Pant is on 13 off 11. Matt Henry to bowl the next over and Tom Blundell is standing up to the stumps.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: BACK-TO-BACK FOURS TO START THE DAY FROM PANT!

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Ajaz starts with a gentle half-volley, Pant gobbles up the gift by hitting it straight down the ground for a four. The second one was no half-volley at all but he made it one by stepping down and hitting it down the ground again for four. Brilliant shot. He then meets the fourth ball with soft hands, lets the ball run off the face of the bat and it goes behind to the boundary. 12 runs off the first over of the day and Pant is on 13 off seven.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Pitch report with Karthik and Kartik

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: As was the case yesterday, Murali Kartik and Dinesh Karthik are on the pitch report. The latter says that the pitch is not as red as it usually is in Mumbai, which indicates dryness. There was some residual moisture on top and it looked like it had bound the surface, well, but looking into the footmarks, it gives a good idea about the soil. There's not a lot of grass coverage, the top layer is soft and that's the reason some balls are keeping low. The dryness is something not associated with the Wankhede and that's the reason 14 wickets fell yesterday.

India's approach should be to mix it up. They have to play their shots and put pressure on the bowlers but the base of all that has to be strong defence.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: It is something we have seen quite a few times leading up to this Test as well. India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: How the Wankhede Stadium looks

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: There is some haze hanging in the air, possibly due to the Diwali crackers last night. It is as humid as yesterday, maybe slightly cooler than it was at this time but there won't be much of a difference. If India manage to bat through the second session, their batters will have to contend with what Mitchell and Young endured yesterday but they should also know that the Kiwis will be struggling even more.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: They don't trail by a lot but they don't have too many wickets left after the silly cricket they played late on Day 1. India's score stands at 86/4 in 19 overs, they trail New Zealand by 149 runs with six wickets in hand. Shubman Gill will walk out today on 31 off 38 balls while Risbabh Pant is on one off one.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: A record broken at the Wankhede

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: India's tenacity with the ball brought all 10 New Zealand wickets on Day 1 of this Test. Then, the silly cricket that they deployed with the bat right at the end of the day added four more to that tally, making it a total of 14 wickets in the day. That is the most that have fallen on Day 1 of a Test at the Wankhede Stadium.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: His senior bowlers had no answers to Rachin Ravindra but Washington Sundar is probably wondering what all the fuss was about. Ravindra fell on five off 12 on Day 1 of the third Test to Washington. He had fallen on 65 and nine in the second Test, with the first of those dismissals coming right after Washington was re-introduced into the attack.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Mitchell and Young's gladiatorial innings

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: The travails of Daryl Mitchell and Will Young, particularly the former, on Day 1 at the boiling Wankhede Stadium showed something that you'd rarely get to see an ODI, definitely never get to see in a T20I. Here were two batters not just fighting against the opposition, but against the elements as well. They grew up playing in the temperate climes of Canterbury and the Central Districts in New Zealand and now they were in the punishing October heat of Mumbai which takes a toll on even those who grew up in hotter places.

The second session was the most brutal. However, they also seemed to be aware of the fact that their opposition are also human and no human could possibly be at ease in that environment. And so you saw 13 players out there, braving the heat and humidity and still putting on a level of cricket that casual players can only dream of. Young finally fell to Ravindra Jadeja on 71 off 38, and the bowler just looked up at the sky and walked towards the catcher Rohit Sharma in relief. Mitchell went down spread eagle on the ground at the non-striker's end and threw away his black helmet. He then ran ones where there were three for the rest of the session and came out after Tea looking much better. His valiant knock finally ended on 82 off 129 balls.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: India's rollercoaster ride on Day 1

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: There were highs, there were lows, and it all ended with some “hara-kiri”, as Ravi Shastri put it. It started pretty well, as Akash Deep dismissed Devon Conway in the first hour and then Washington Sundar picked Tom Latham and Rachin Ravindra before lunch. And then, Daryl Mitchell and Will Young made India grind in the second session, while themselves getting pretty ground up. Once again, India made a good finish to the session courtesy of Ravindra Jadeja, who picked three wickets before Tea.

Jadeja continued to scythe through the opposition and New Zealand were all out for 235. Rohit Sharma fell early to Matt Henry but it looked India were going to finish Day 1 on top thanks to a dominant 53-run stand for the second wicket between Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, this time India made a horror finish to a session. With just minutes to go, Jaiswal fell reverse sweeping, nighwatchman Mohammed Siraj fell for a golden duck and took a review with him and Virat Kohli fell attempting a run that was never there. India went from 78/1 in the 18th over to finishing on 86/4 in 19 overs at Stumps.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: India were sitting pretty at the top of the WTC table for much of this year. However, the last two defeats, combined with the horror end to the day yesterday, has put all kinds of question marks on whether they can make it. South Africa have just given Bangladesh a 2-0 hiding and so they are on the rise, as are Sri Lanka. Both sides face each other in a Test series at the Proteas' home after this. India, meanwhile, embark on a gruelling five-Test tour of Australia after this.

On his return to his home city three years later, Patel was on target once again. He did endure an expensive start, but made up for it in the final half-an-hour of the day, dismissimg Jaiswal and Siraj to put India on the back foot.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Rohit Sharma's poor form continues

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: India’s chaotic final 15 minutes did leave the fans and experts reeling, but a deeper concern that’s been simmering is the prolonged dip in form of skipper Rohit Sharma. Once again, Rohit struggled in the first innings, managing only an 18-ball 18 before falling to Matt Henry. His recent scores of 2, 52, 0, and 8 in this series, along with a disappointing run against Bangladesh where his highest was a mere 23 across four innings, highlight a worrying trend for the Indian captain.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Kohli's run out baffles many

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: More than the questionable nightwatchman decision, however, it was Virat Kohli’s self-inflicted run out in the final moments of Day 1 that left fans and experts in disbelief. Kohli, after nudging the ball only as far as mid-on, unexpectedly decided to attempt a single. Shubman Gill, at the other end, responded promptly, but Kohli found himself well short of the crease, even with a dive, as a direct hit from Matt Henry ended his brief innings at four. Former Indian head coach Anil Kumble described Kohli’s decision as "suicidal," reflecting the frustration felt by fans.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: The bizarre ‘nightwatchman’ call

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: In a puzzling move, Team India opted to send Mohammed Siraj as a nightwatchman with roughly two overs left in the day, despite his limited batting credentials. Given the challenging conditions on a pitch that had shown sharp turn and bounce throughout the day, the decision raised eyebrows. India, who had been fielding all day, were well aware of the difficulty that the turning pitch posed to batters. Unfortunately, India’s gamble backfired immediately, as Siraj was trapped lbw on the very first delivery he faced. Adding to the frustration, Siraj chose to review the decision, burning one of India’s limited DRS opportunities.

New Zealand's celebrations hit a peak with the run-out of Virat Kohli in the next over, courtesy of a direct hit from Matt Henry, dismissing Kohli out for four after an ill-advised single.

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: All eyes on Gill, Pant

India vs New Zealand LIVE Score 3rd Test Day 2: Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant will look to steady India’s innings after a disappointing end to the opening day of the Test. Gill showed resilience during his short stay at the crease so far, scoring an assured 31 off 38 balls. Pant, meanwhile, has just begun his innings, with a single off his first delivery. India can take encouragement from Pant’s recent form, particularly his gritty 99 under challenging conditions in the first Test in Pune. Both batters now have the chance to set the tone for India’s response, with the team looking to rebound strongly on Day 2 and build a solid foundation to put pressure back on the visitors.
