India vs South Africa Highlights 3rd ODI: IND beat SA by 7 wickets, win series 2-1

Avesh Khan is introduced into the attack. He starts with a two-run over as SA move to 15/1 after 5 overs.

Two good shots coming off the middle of the blade by Janneman Malan. One fetches him a double, while the other races towards the fence at the cover region. IND: 13/1 (4 overs)

Washington Sundar strikes as he packs Quinton de Kock on 6. The batter gets a leading edge and is caught by Avesh Khan at backward point.

Mohammed Siraj will share the new ball duties with Washington Sundar. Quinton de Kock will be on strike against the pacer.

A quiet start by South Africa as the pair of Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan rotate the strike. Just two runs come off the first over.

Shikhar Dhawan wins toss, opts to bowl; match starts at 2:00 pm

The official word has come and toss will take place at 1:45pm and the match will start at 2:00 pm. 

No overs have been lost.

"I have been practising different types of roles in the last couple of years, I have put in time to understand the types of roles in different teams. I have been given instructions to be ready and do this in the last one year. 

"Physically I have been doing a lot of top-order batting, but mentally I am trying to understand the game and how to react according to the situation, a lot of learning has gone into this. 

“It's important to keep the focus on the process, that has been the talk in the team meetings.”

The average first-inning score at the venue is 230. The 300-run mark has been breached only two times in 26 ODIs.

The players are warming up and there is no sign of rain as of now. The ground staffs are toiling hard to get the outfield ready.

“It looks really good. The pitch has been under covers, there might be a bit tackiness. The grass holds the pitch together. Team winning the toss should elect to bowl first, because of the dimensions of the ground”

The toss for the 3rd ODI between India and South has been delayed due to wet outfield in Delhi. The official inspection is at 1:30 pm. 

Another cause of worry for South Africa is their captain Temba Bavuma's form. Ever since recovering from the elbow injury, which had sidelined him for three months, the skipper has managed just 11 runs in his previous four innings and will be desperate to find some form ahead of the T20 World Cup.  

He had skipped the previous ODI due to illness.

While the series may not be very important for India, a lot is at stake for the Proteas. They are currently placed 11th on the Super League points table, and a win will help them jump to ninth, ahead of Sri Lanka and Ireland.

However, they'll still be nine points behind West Indies, who are placed eighth - the cut-off for direct entry for the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be played in India. 

Hence, a win will give South Africa the chance they so gravely need.

Shreyas Iyer has shown some great touch in the ODIs. The right-hander stands at the top among the highest run-getter from the series. He scored a half-century in the first match and went to slam a ton in the second. The right-handed batter has so far accumulated 163 runs from two outings.

Sanju Samson stands second in the list. He has 116 runs from the same number of matches.

1st ODI: The first match was played at Lucknow, which was a truncated contest due to rain and wet outfield. The match was reduced to 40-over a side and it was South Africa, who after batting first handed India a stiff 250-run target. In response, India got off to a slow start and it looked like a one-way contest until Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson arrived at the middle of the scene. The duo then took India very close to the target, but the hosts fell short by 9 runs. 

2nd ODI: The following contest played in Delhi once again saw South Africa bat first. Mohammed Siraj's clinical effort helped India restrict the visitors for 278/7 in 50 overs. 

Then came the splendid batting by Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer. While Kishan missed out on a well deserved ton by 7 runs, Iyer played an unbeaten knock of 113 off 111 balls as the Men In Blue chased down the target with 25 balls to spare and won the contest by 7 wickets.

"Obviously, you feel bad when you're not part of the team for a big tournament where you could get good exposure. If you win a World Cup for your country, it's an entirely different, proud feeling. But I feel the selectors and coaches must have seen some shortcomings [in my game], and even I feel there's a need for improvement. I know I haven't given my best performance yet.

David Miller has been in great touch throughout the tour of India; since a brilliant century in the second T20I against India, Miller has remained unbeaten in four innings across both formats (T20Is and ODIs). He scored a brilliant 75 in the first ODI of the series against India and followed it up with another unbeaten 35 in the Ranchi match.

The left-hander has fairly struggled in the first ODI where he faced 37 balls for his 20, but made a resounding comeback in the next game as he fell short by merely 7 runs from what could've been his maiden ODI ton. 

Ishan scored 93 off 84 balls, smashing four fours and seven sixes en route his knock in Ranchi.

Shahbaz Ahmed was give a maiden international cap in the second ODI in Ranchi, and while the spinner did concede 54 runs in his ten overs, he also took the important wicket of Janneman Malan.

Will he be retained in the XI?

The Indian opening duo of Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan have had a forgettable series with the bat so far. In two games, Gill has scores of 3 and 28, while Dhawan scored 4 and 13 in the two matches respectively.
